Livestock and climate: what results?

Like all human activity, herbivorous farming emits greenhouse gases. It contributes 8% to climate change in France. But what is less known is that French livestock farming contributes to the storage and maintenance of a huge carbon reserve in the soil, thanks to the 11 million hectares of permanent meadows and rangelands.

Thus, livestock meadows offset on average 30% of emissions from ruminant livestock farming through this storage, which corresponds to almost all of the methane emitted by ruminants.
